 INTERNATIONAL DATA COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE OFFERED
 SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Sears Communications Co.(R) (SCC) and Philips Communications & Processing Services International (Philips C&P) today announced an alliance to provide international SNA data communications services to businesses and institutions. The alliance creates one of the most far-reaching and reliable data networks in the world with more than 445 network nodes in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
 The alliance will provide data transport services, allowing users to transmit shipping notices, invoices, electronic mail, financial data and other information around the world, saving time and money.
 SCC will provide the network backbone, network management and marketing in North America. Philips C&P will provide the network backbone, network management and marketing in Europe, South America and Asia Pacific.
 "This alliance eliminates the current connectivity barriers that many businesses face when they try to connect offices, branches, factories and facilities around the world," said Gary Weis, president of Sears Communications Co. "Our customers will now be offered a single point of contact for their international connections, backed by a full team of technicians and consultants."
 Rinus Gelijns, chief executive officer of Philips Communications & Processing said the alliance offers customers unique advantages. "Philips and Sears are two of the world's largest users of information technology, so we have an end-user viewpoint that helps us anticipate and respond to our customers quickly. Both organizations have a wealth of experience in handling the various telecommunications regulations, equipment suppliers, carriers and protocols."
 Initially, the alliance between SCC and Philips C&P will provide IBM System Network Architecture (SNA) data transport services. Both organizations are examining the possibility of offering other protocols in the near future allowing for a full growth path.
 "We have chosen to offer SNA protocol because of customer demand for the speed and reliability of international, end-to-end SNA service," said SCC's Weis.
 Through the alliance, customers will have access to 24-hour a day, seven-day a week Help Desk response and network management. Testing is underway now to allow the network management teams remote diagnostic capabilities worldwide.
 The Harper Group, a leading international freight logistics firm with 370 branches in 43 countries, has used the service during its beta test phase. The company has linked worldwide headquarters in San Francisco with its Frankfurt, Germany office which supports local connections to Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart and Dusseldorf. Users in Germany access vital logistics information in San Francisco maintained throughout The Harper Group's information network.

 Sears Communications Co. is a leading provider of data communications services for intercompany and intracompany uses. SCC provides hundreds of businesses with data transport, electronic data interchange (EDI) and financial EDI services. SCC is a subsidiary of Sears Technology Services Inc., the corporate information technology organization of Sears, Roebuck and Co.
 Philips Communications & Processing Services International, an independent, fully-owned subsidiary of Philips Electronics N.V., is the supplier of data communications and processing services to the Philips group and the external market. The Philips C&P network connects the majority of countries where Philips has a presence.
