INTERLINK SIGNS SIX ADDITIONAL REGIONAL NETWORKS
 SAN FRANCISCO, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Interlink Network, a

subsidiary of Visa U.S.A., announced today that STAR SYSTEM, Iowa Transfer System, NetWorks, KETS, Alert and The Owl will join Interlink, the nation's largest direct-debit, point-of-sale network. The networks join GulfNet, BankMate, Internet/Most and Cash Station which have already committed to Interlink.
Through this alliance, the new regional networks will process Interlink transactions throughout the networks' operating regions in 32 states, bringing the total number of Interlink states to 38. Cardholders use their Interlink cards at participating locations to make purchases and the transaction amount is then deducted from their checking accounts.
"We place tremendous value on regional network support of our Interlink program," said Wesley C. Tallman, executive vice president of consumer products for Visa U.S.A. "As Interlink continues to gain nationwide momentum as the premier direct-debit system, we fully expect that the majority of the country's regional networks will announce plans to participate in Interlink, either as full members or as processors."
Interlink has been in operation in five Western states since the mid-1980s and currently processes more than half of all direct-debit transactions conducted in the United States. Through its acquisition of Interlink last fall, Visa has expanded the program nationwide, launching the country's first national on-line, direct-debit program.
In 1991, Interlink processed more than 100 million transactions, generating more that $2.5 billion in sales. Currently, there are more than 12.5 million Interlink cardholders.
Visa, with more than 9.5 million acceptance locations and 281 million cards issued, including 142 million in the United States, is the world's largest consumer card payment system.
