INTERIOR SECRETARY BRUCE BABBITT ANNOUNCES THE AVAILABILITY OF NEW EDUCATIONAL POSTER: 'ELECTING THE PRESIDENT 1789-1992'

/ADVANCE/ WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt today announced the availability of a new educational poster that explains the 1992 election results in every county across the United States, including statewide results in every election since John Adams in 1796.
"This poster conveys an important story to students about presidential election trends," Babbitt said. "The observance of President's Day presents an excellent opportunity for us to focus on the electoral process and the nation's changing political history."
The two-sided poster, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Mapping Division, presents an interesting and concise 200- year summary of how the presidents were elected and depicts how the views of voters have changed over the years.
The 30-by-40-inch poster is accompanied by a set of teacher- tested classroom exercises that demonstrate the workings of the electoral process. The exercises are in three sets, covering elementary, intermediate and high school.
Copies of the poster, "Electing the President, 1789-1992," along with classroom activities, are available free while supplies last from any U.S. Geological Survey Earth Science Information Center or by calling 800-USA-MAPS.
