 INTEREST HIGH FOR NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER;
 COMPANY REPORTS INQUIRIES OUTPACE PRODUCTION
 LANHAM, Md., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Range Rover of North America reported more than 625 customer inquiries have been received for the Land Rover Defender 110 which is scheduled for a late summer introduction. Only 500 of the world-famous 4X4 will be imported as part of the company's plan to build on the Land Rover image and expand its product offerings here.
 Charles R. Hughes, president of the U.S. arm of the British manufacturer, said, "We're pleased at the enthusiastic reaction generated by news reports that it will be available later this year. We could have sold the one prototype we have in the country many times over at private showings we've held at a few of our dealerships."
 The Land Rover was last sold in the United States in 1974. Several thousand are still on the road and commanding as much as 10 times their original selling price, the company said.
 The Defender 110 will join the upscale Range Rover, its luxury stablemate, when it goes on sale through selected U.S. dealers in August.
 "Anyone who has ever dreamed of owning the vehicle made famous in movies and TV programs about Africa should contact their nearest Range Rover dealer for information," Hughes added. "At the rate we're going, there's a good chance they'll be sold out before they get here."
 Final pricing for the V-8 powered, five-speed, five-door, nine- passenger station wagon has not been set but Hughes said the target is under $40,000.
 Range Rover and Land Rover are manufactured by Land Rover, which is part of the Rover Group of Solihull, England.
