INTERDIGITAL SIGNS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING TO FORM INDONESIAN JOINT VENTURE

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- InterDigital Communications Corporation (AMEX: IDC) announced today at its annual shareholders' meeting that it has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with PT.Industri Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT.INTI), the Indonesian government-owned telecommunications manufacturing company, to enter into a Technical and Business Cooperation Agreement (TBCA).
The MOU establishes a near term date by which definitive documentation is required. The companies intend to pursue a phased program whereby InterDigital, PT.INTI and PT.Amalgam, InterDigital's exclusive distributor in Indonesia, will jointly manufacture, assemble, distribute, and provide post-sales service for InterDigital's UltraPhone(R) wireless digital communications systems within and outside of Indonesia. PT.INTI currently manufactures personal and business telephones, pay phones, switching equipment and other modern telecommunications equipment.
"We are pleased to be able to assist the Indonesian government's ambitious plan for upgrading Indonesia's telecommunications needs and infrastructure. By manufacturing our systems in Indonesia with such a reputable organization as PT.INTI, InterDigital will be able to meet the long-term demand for state-of-the-art wireless communications not only in Indonesia but also in other South East Asian and Islamic Conference Organization countries as well," said William W. Erdman, president and chief executive officer of InterDigital.
InterDigital, in conjunction with PT.Amalgam, has installed and maintains 18 Ultraphone systems in Indonesia. The MOU provides that InterDigital and PT.Amalgam will jointly train the PT.INTI personnel and maintain all current and future systems installed in Indonesia and throughout South East Asia.
InterDigital is a pioneer in Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Broadband-Code Division Multiple Access (B-CDMA) digital wireless technology and products. Its Ultraphone TDMA digital radiotelephone system is ordered or installed in more than 175 locations worldwide.
