INTERDIGITAL'S ULTRAPHONE RECEIVES CERTIFICATION FOR RUSSIA AND ALL THE COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- InterDigital Communications Corporation (AMEX: IDC) announced today that the Ultraphone wireless digital telephone system has been type classified and certified for use in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) by the Scientific Research Institute, a division of the Ministry of Communications of the Russian Federation.
This certification of standardization is similar to that accorded to telephony equipment by Bellcore in the United States. Prior to completion of certification, telephony equipment cannot be sold in the CIS for connection to a public switch. Extensive testing of the Ultraphone system was initiated in Yalta, Crimea, Ukraine this past spring and completed at the InterDigital Laboratories in King of Prussia this fall.
An Ultraphone system has been operating in Yalta, providing service and acting as a demonstration system, since February of this year. The ministry has indicated to InterDigital that the current potential market for the installation of telephone equipment in the CIS could be as high as 60 million end users, especially in rural and remote areas where it is difficult to use wire lines.
According to InterDigital's Vice President of Sales and Marketing David J. Cade, "InterDigital is considering many different opportunities for marketing Ultraphone systems throughout the CIS."
