INTERACTIVE MEDIA AND HOME SHOPPING SEGMENTS PUSH TREND TOWARD DIRECT MARKETING STRATEGIC ALLIANCES AND JOINT VENTURES UP 95 PERCENT

WEST HENRIETTA, N.Y., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Joint ventures and strategic alliances among direct marketers increased 95 percent to 43 transactions for the first six months of 1993, compared to the same period in 1992. Both those companies that sell via home shopping channels, and those providers of equipment, software and services designed for interactive shopping media are responsible for driving the industry trend.
According to Michael Petsky, president of Information Authorities, Inc. and publisher of The Direct Marketing Mergers, Acquisitions & Strategic Activities Yearbook, "There has been an incredible amount of activity among direct marketing users and suppliers that want to be a part of the Interactive Age. Numerous companies, from a broad range of market segments, foresee long-term market potential and opportunities -- from catalog marketers, retailers and publishers, to cable companies, major software houses and equipment providers. These companies are teaming up with partners that will help them gain faster access to the interactive market."
Another significant trend for the industry is a 49 percent increase in acquisitions and buyouts among direct marketers for the first six months of 1993. Although suppliers accounted for nearly two-thirds of those companies acquired, the largest individual segment of acquired companies was among catalogers. "There have been 13 catalogs acquired so far this year, and the interest in these properties is only getting stronger," commented Petsky. "Renewed interest in catalog M&A activity, combined with the upsurge in joint ventures and strategic alliances, and a significant decrease in bankruptcy filings may further indicate a break in recent recessionary conditions."
