INTELSAT ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT WITH RUSSIA'S INFORMKOSMOS FOR ADDITIONAL SATELLITE CAPACITY

WASHINGTON, March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- INTELSAT Director General and Chief Executive Officer Irving Goldstein today announced that INTELSAT and INFORMKOSMOS have entered into an agreement which grants INTELSAT the option to lease up to three satellites of its Express class, with the first satellite capacity available in mid-1994.
In making the announcement, Goldstein stated: "This agreement demonstrates INTELSAT's aggressive commitment to secure near- and mid-term satellite capacity, in addition to our long-term spacecraft procurement programs, to meet the growing demands of our customers around the world."
INFORMKOSMOS was established by the Russian Federation to design, control, manufacture, own and finance the Express satellites series. Each Express satellite leased by INTELSAT will have 10 C-ban 36 MHz transponders and two Ku-band 36 MHz transponders.
With headquarters in Washington, INTELSAT is the international non-profit commercial cooperative of 125 member nations that owns and operates the global satellite communications system used worldwide by 180 member and non-member countries, territories and dependencies for their international, and in many instances, domestic communications.
The major provider of transoceanic telephone and television services, INTELSAT also offers, via its 19-satellite system, business services such as international video, teleconferencing, facsimile, data and telex.
