INTELSAT BOARD OF GOVERNORS SELECTS IRVING GOLDSTEIN
 AS DIRECTOR GENERAL
WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Mohamed J. Mulla, chairman of the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT) board of governors, today announced the selection of Irving Goldstein of the United States as director general, subject to confirmation by the INTELSAT Assembly of Parties.
Goldstein is chairman and chief executive officer of the Communications Satellite Corporation (COMSAT), the U.S. signatory to INTELSAT. He joined COMSAT's office of general counsel in 1966 and, after holding a number of senior positions, was elected chairman and chief executive officer in 1985. Goldstein represented COMSAT on the INTELSAT board of governors from 1974 to 1981 and served as its chairman during the 1980-81 term.
Goldstein also serves on many boards and committees in the fields of academia, business and federal and local government. He is a director of the Security Trust Company in Washington and of Computer Associates International, Inc. He participates on advisory committees to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) -- a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce. He is also a member of the presidentially appointed National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.
Goldstein's other positions include: director of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, a member of councils affiliated with the Law School of New York University and the School of Advanced International Studies of The Johns Hopkins University; a member and chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of Queens College (CUNY) Foundation; director of the Corporation Against Drug Abuse; a member of the Mayor's Management Advisory Committee of the District of Columbia; and a member of the Executive Committee of the Federal City Council in Washington.
Goldstein was graduated from Queens College and received a Juris Doctor degree from New York University School of Law in 1963. He is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar and the Bars of the District of Columbia and the state of New York.
An Extraordinary Assembly of Parties, scheduled to meet in Washington in early 1992, will consider the proposed appointment. Following confirmation, Goldstein will assume office as soon as practicable.
The director general of INTELSAT serves as the organization's chief executive and is directly responsible for the performance of all functions relating to the management and operation of the INTELSAT system.
With headquarters in Washington, INTELSAT is the international, commercial cooperative of 121 member nations that owns and operates the global communications satellite system used worldwide by 180 member and non-member countries, territories and dependencies for their international and, in many instances, domestic communications.
The major provider of transoceanic telephone and television services, INTELSAT also offers via its 17-satellite global system such services as international video, teleconferencing, facsimile, data and telex.
