INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES 1992 YEAR-END RESULTS

NORCROSS, Ga., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Intelligent Systems Corporation (AMEX: INS) announced today its financial results for the year ended Dec. 31, 1992.
For the 12 month period, the company recorded sales revenue of $50,784,000, a 4 percent increase compared to revenue of $48,688,000 in 1991.
For the year ended Dec. 31, 1992, net loss was $3,715,000 or $.56 per share compared to a loss of $1,932,000 or $.27 per share in 1991. The company's loss from operations was $1,823,000 less in 1992 than the loss from operations in 1991. However, several non-recurring capital gains in each of the past two years resulted in a larger overall net loss in 1992 than in 1991.
The 1992 results include a gain of $1,700,000 recorded in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992 from the partial sale of the company's holdings in IQ Software Corporation (NASDAQ: IQSW) during the initial public offering of IQ Software. The company retains ownership of
540,163 shares of stock in IQ Software. The 1991 results include a gain of $3,229,000 on the sale of the company's OrCAD subsidiary and a gain of $1,900,000 recorded in the fourth quarter of 1991 on payment of a note receivable which had been carried on the company's balance sheet at a discounted value.
The year-to-year revenue increase is due to a 19 percent increase in revenue at the company's international subsidiaries offset by a decline in domestic revenue as a result of the sale of the OrCAD subsidiary last year.
For the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1992, the company reported net income of $26,000 or $0.00 per share on revenues of $13,613,000, compared to net income of $69,000 or $0.01 per share on revenue of $11,975,000 in the comparable period in 1991.
As previously reported, on Oct. 1, 1992, Intelligent Systems Corporation acquired Intelligent Enclosures Corporation, a small growth firm involved in the design, manufacture and marketing of mini-environment systems used in ultraclean manufacturing such as semiconductor fabrication. The financial results of Intelligent Enclosures are consolidated with those of the company for the fourth quarter of 1992.
According to J. Leland Strange, president of Intelligent Systems: "Operating results have been impacted significantly by losses related to our Brier Technology subsidiary, which has now wound down its operations and related expenses. Despite consistent revenue growth at our European distribution subsidiaries, there has been intense price competition in the market for personal computer products which has had a negative impact on gross margins in 1992. Furthermore, the weakening of the pound sterling against the U.S. dollar resulted in substantial currency exchange losses in the second half of 1992.
"In response to these conditions, we are placing greater emphasis on our personal computer education and training business in the U.K. and France. Also, we are encouraged with the growing product acceptance and market awareness of Intelligent Enclosures' mini-cleanroom systems."
Intelligent Systems Corporation common stock is traded on the American Stock Exchange under the symbol INS. The company conducts its business through subsidiaries: InterQuad (European distribution of microcomputer products), Intelligent Systems Japan (Pacific Rim distribution of software products), Quadram (enhancement products) and Intelligent Enclosures (mini-environment systems). The company also has investments in developing companies, primarily technology based.
