 INTELLIGENT ELECTRONICS REPORTS 42 PERCENT
INCREASE IN BIZMART SAME STORE SALES
EXTON, Pa., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Intelligent Electronics Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: INEL) today reported that its retail chain of BizMart supercenters increased same store sales for the four-week period ending May 2, 1992, by 42 percent compared to cash register sales during the same period last year.
This calculation takes into account one less day for Easter this year and compares to the four-week period ending April 27 a year ago. Comparable store sales increases for the quarter were 48 percent, compared to the prior-year quarter.
Last July, BizMart launched a store rollout and enhancement program featuring an expanded product category of name-brand computers and computer products. At the close of this April period, the sales of computers and computer-related merchandise accounted for approximately 37 percent of BizMart's sales. Comparable store sales for traditional lines increased 8 percent for the period and 14 percent for the quarter, indicating BizMart's traditional office products may be benefitting from synergies with the expanded computer product merchandise. Of BizMart's 82 supercenters, 54 have been opened a year or more and are included in the calculation.
"Customers are relying on BizMart supercenters to help make their offices...at work or at home...more productive," said James Berk, president and chief executive officer of Intelligent's Consumer Retail Group. "They are responding enthusiastically to our wide selection of value-priced products and services for the office, from supplies to electronics to computers to furniture."
BizMart supercenters provide total office productivity solutions to businesses in 15 states and 37 major markets nationwide. This month BizMart plans to open up to five new supercenters in new and existing markets. New markets will include Los Angeles, Calif.; Eugene, Ore.; and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
