INTEL TO PRODUCE 'NEXT GENERATION' COMPUTERS AND COMPONENTS IN PUERTO RICO

NEW YORK, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) is investing $10 million in its existing manufacturing complex in Puerto Rico to expand production into "next generation" microprocessors and components.
To date, Intel has invested over $70 million in its Puerto Rico facility since the company established operations there 13 years ago.
This expansion will enable Intel to manufacture a group of products designed to increase portable computer capacity. Such products will also permit simultaneous integration of telephone/video conference calls and regular usage of personal computers.
Intel has earmarked $7 million to facilitate manufacture of miniaturized printed circuit units in Puerto Rico. These card-sized PC boards serve as components in Intel's Pentium microprocessors, one of Intel's most advanced models in the market to date.
Employment at the Intel facility will climb from 1,100 at present to 1,500 by the end of the year. "We're bringing the latest Intel technology to Puerto Rico," said Mr. Pablo Rodriguez, general manager of the complex. Producing over 7,000 miniaturized boards per day, the Puerto Rico plant is Intel's largest manufacturing operation in the world.
Intel microprocessor/component systems, which can accommodate up to 50,000 varied software applications, are utilized by over 500 computer systems manufacturers.
"Next generation" products to be manufactured in Puerto Rico will interface with facsimile and cellular phone communications and monitor selected TV transmissions. They will also amplify memory capacity of existing computers.
New production will be based on a series of "Inter-Changeable" boards, measuring about the size of a credit card. Intel has allocated $3 million to start production of the "IC" boards in Puerto Rico next year.
