 INTEL AND UNISYS STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP
Unisys to standardize open systems microproduct line on Intel
architecture; companies to collaborate in development and
requirements definition for future X86 products
BLUE BELL, Pa., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), Santa Clara, Calif., and Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding for expanded cooperation and support.
Under the agreement, Unisys will standardize its open systems product lines on the Intel X86 processor architecture.
Unisys and Intel said that they will significantly increase collaboration on the X86 product family developments to be incorporated into the Unisys product line. Unisys, which already manufactures and markets a broad-line of Intel X86-based systems, is one of the industry's largest open systems vendors to commit to the Intel architecture for such a full range of systems.
The two companies will work cooperatively on technical analysis and requirements definition. Unisys and Intel will mutually support key areas of interest in software development, such as advanced implementations of UNIX System V Release 4 (SVR4), the Intel Application Binary Interface (iABI) standards activities, and advanced distributed software and multiprocessor hardware implementations. Cooperation between the two companies will benefit future high-end on-line transaction processing implementations.
According to Dr. Andrew S. Grove, Intel's president and chief executive officeri?s commitment from Unisys is a major endorsement of the Intel X86 architecture as the common denominator of open computing. The relationship between our companies combines Intel's leadership in advanced microprocessor technology with Unisys broad experience in designing high-performance systems and its large, established customer base."
James A. Unruh, Unisys chairman and chief executive officer noted, "With this agreement, Unisys has committed to base its open commercial systems on Intel's X86 architecture. This commitment will protect our customers' investments in Unisys microproduct-based open systems and provide a clear growth path to meet their future needs. The initiative will enable us to deliver the industry's most scalable, cost-effective systems for distributed on-line transaction processing and other mission-critical commercial applications in the networked enterprise of the 1990s," Unruh said.
Worldwide Unisys has shipped more than 2 million Intel X86-based systems. The Unisys U 6000 Series of systems based on the UNIX System V operating system provides a broad range of compatible workgroup and high-performance servers supporting one to 1000+ users. Unisys PW2 Advantage family of PCs are offered in network applications directly to Unisys customers worldwide and to over 400 value-added resellers and distributors. In addition, in selected markets, Unisys continues to sell engineering workstations to meet the systems integration requirements of specific large customers. The Unisys CTOS family of networked commercial workstations has grown an average of 20 percent per year over the past five years and today totals over 900,000 systems shipped, making it the third largest workstation customer base worldwide.
