INTEGRATED HEALTH SERVICES PURCHASES AN INTEREST IN THE TUTERA GROUP

HUNT VALLEY, Md., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Health Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: IHSI), today announced it has formed a partnership with the Tutera Group of Kansas City, Mo., which manages over 8,700 long term care beds in nine states. IHS will have the exclusive right to develop subacute care services and provide ancillary services in the Tutera Group facilities.
"These facilities will provide a tremendous opportunity for future expansion of IHS' national network of Medical Specialty Units (MSUs) and for growth of ancillary services such as pharmacy and rehabilitation services," said Dr. Robert N. Elkins, chairman, president and chief executive officer of IHS. "This is a major step in implementing our strategic business plan because it provides a foundation for future growth without purchasing facilities."
MSUs provide a variety of cost-effective, subacute care services traditionally given in an acute care hospital. The high quality alternate site care can be delivered to patients at approximately half of what an acute care hospital would charge. IHS currently operates 624 MSU beds, through a network covering 21 cities in 15 states.
"When we looked for a strategic partner, IHS was a natural fit. As the established leader in the area of subacute care and with its reputation for high quality services, IHS offers the solution to bridge rising healthcare costs," said Dr. Dominic Tutera of the Tutera Group. "IHS, with the proven track record of its MSU model, has demonstrated that high quality care can be cost-effective."
The Tutera Group had its beginnings in the late 1970's with the formation of Columbia Construction. Columbia started with health care related developments raging from medical offices, day care centers, and ambulatory surgical facilities, to specialized eye treatment and research centers and its own nursing centers in the Kansas City area.
Based on the success of its own operations, the Tutera Group was commissioned by several lending institutions to provide management to financially troubled facilities in different parts of the country. Success with these troubled facilities, in turn, led to additional contracts with multi-facility corporations containing as many as 100 locations or as few as two locations.
The Tutera Group, with a reputation as a "turn around specialist," is focused on providing long-term, full service, third party management. The Tutera Group provides services directly to owners seeking access to national purchasing contracts and health care professionals, as well as financial institutions and trustees seeking unaffiliated third party management.
IHS is the leading provider of subacute care and uses its MSU program to provide a wide range of subacute stage medical and rehabilitative services traditionally given in an acute care hospital. Patients who are medically stable but require sophisticated monitoring and therapy receive specialized care such as ventilator therapy, wound management and post-operative care. The MSU setting is both cost effective and less institutional. IHS currently operates 63 facilities nationwide with more than 8,400 beds including a 624-bed network of MSU beds in 32 specialized units.
