INTEGRATED HEALTH SERVICES OPENS 123 NEW MEDICAL SPECIALTY BEDS; COMPANY ALSO ACQUIRES LEASEHOLD INTEREST IN ALABAMA FACILITY

HUNT VALLEY, Md., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Health Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: IHSI) today announced it has opened 123 additional beds in its national network of Medical Specialty Units (MSUs), which provide a variety of cost-effective, subacute care services traditionally given in an acute care hospital. The new MSU beds were opened in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, South Carolina, New Jersey and New Hampshire.
Separately, IHS also announced the acquisition of a leasehold interest in Hanover House, a facility in Birmingham, Ala. with a total of 80 beds. Twenty of these beds will initially be upgraded to MSU beds.
"We opened 311 new MSU beds in 1992, bringing our total to 624 MSU beds, topping our goal of 500. We are already making rapid progress toward our goal of operating 1,000 new MSU beds by year-end 1993," said Robert N. Elkins, M.D., chairman, president and CEO. "In addition, the acquisition of a leasehold interest in Hanover House provides an excellent base of the development of future MSUs in Alabama, a growing market for us in subacute care."
"Our MSU network now covers 21 cities in 15 states. We are confident that we can maintain a level of high growth because there is a large, unmet need for alternate site subacute care. This high quality care can be delivered to patients at approximately half of what an acute care hospital would charge. Therefore, we are very well positioned to participate in the push for cost containment in healthcare," continued Dr. Elkins. "The recent completion of our $115 million convertible debt offering enables us to execute our strategic expansion program."
IHS is the leading provider of subacute care which uses its MSU program to provide a wide range of subacute stage medical and rehabilitative services traditionally given in an acute care hospital. Patients who are medically stable but require sophisticated monitoring and therapy receive specialized care such as ventilator therapy, wound management and post-operative care. The MSU setting is both cost- effective and less institutional. IHS currently operate 63 facilities nationwide with more than 8,400 beds including a 624 bed network of MSU beds in 32 specialized units.
