INTEGRATED HEALTH SERVICES BROADENS MEDICAL SPECIALTY UNIT SERVICES
 AND ACQUIRES NEW FACILITY
HUNT VALLEY, Md., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Health Services, Inc. (IHS) (NASDAQ: IHSI) announced today that it will develop a new type of Medical Specialty Unit (MSU) called an MSU II. The new units will focus on serving patients who do not require the intensive nursing services of a standard MSU. This expands the subacute services available in the company's national network of MSUs which provide a variety of cost-effective subacute care services traditionally provided in a hospital. The MSU II units initially will be developed only in facilities that have an existing Medical Specialty Unit. The company plans to develop 220 MSU II beds by December 1993 and have at least 1,000 total MSU beds in its national network by Dec. 1993.
"The MSU II units are being developed in response to requests from hospitals and insurance companies to satisfy a growing demand for high quality subacute care," said Robert N. Elkins, M.D., chairman and CEO. "The new units will be adjacent to our standard MSUs and will serve to expand the continuum of subacute care services provided by IHS."
Separately, IHS also announced the acquisition of Orange Park, a 145 bed skilled nursing facility in Orange, Calif. The company plans to initially upgrade 20 beds to MSU beds.
IHS uses geriatric care facilities as a platform for the company's MSU program which provides a wide range of subacute stage medical and rehabilitative services traditionally given in an acute care hospital. Patients who are medically stable but require sophistication monitoring and therapy receive specialized care such as ventilator therapy, wound management and post-operative care. The MSU setting is both cost effective and less institutional. IHS currently operates 52 geriatric care facilities nationwide with more than 6,800 beds including a 439 bed network of MSU beds in 24 specialized units.
