INTEGRATED CYCLE SYSTEMS SOLUTION TO BICYCLE THEFT; COMPANY'S PRODUCTS HAILED AS MOST SIGNIFICANT SECURITY DEVELOPMENT IN 20 YEARS

SAN FRANCISCO, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Cycle Systems Inc. (ICS), maker of the highly acclaimed B.A.D. ("Bicycle Anti-theft Device") BONES, today announced that national sales distribution begins today due to the overwhelming success of the product on the West Coast.
ICS also announced the introduction of its second product, the B.A.D. PACK, a U-lock with B.A.D. Bones affixed. Industry leaders have called the B.A.D. product line the most significant development in bicycle security in 20 years.
B.A.D. Bones were invented in 1992 by frame designer Rick Byrd, 25, to address the inherent weakness of the widely used U-shaped lock. The U-lock had been considered state-of-the-art in cycle security for more than a decade. An estimated 20 million cyclists currently depend on it for their bicycle security. By inserting a pipe or car jack, thieves snap the U-lock in as little as seven seconds. The U-lock alone no longer provides effective security. B.A.D. BONES revitalize the U-lock by slipping over the lock shackle, blocking the insertion of thieves' tools and increasing lock strength by an average of 110 percent. Bicycling Magazine, the world's largest cycling publication, called B.A.D. BONES "grief for a thief."
Bicycle thefts total over half a billion dollars in lost property annually. The advent of the mountain bike has increased interest in cycling and has tripled the average cost of the bicycle. This has led to an alarming increase in bicycle theft. "The U-lock is used worldwide and bicycle theft is an international problem in need of a solution. B.A.D. BONES are a proven and necessary response to combat the growing epidemic," says Byrd.
ICS was formed by Byrd and five San Francisco-area racers, commuters and couriers to manufacture and market his patent pending bicycle security devices. Most had bicycles stolen in recent years, and prior to becoming victims of theft, believed the U-lock was invincible. Privately financed, the company initially test-marketed B.A.D. BONES in California and other select markets, but word-of-mouth created nationwide demand among retailers and cyclists. The company has spent the last six months preparing manufacturing for large scale production and signing major distributors throughout the United States and overseas.
Starting today, B.A.D. BONES and B.A.D. PACKS will be distributed to every state of the country. Eighteen major distributors, serving 7,200 independent bicycle dealers, will carry the product to protect the 92 million Americans that ride and the 20 million cyclists who own U-locks. Distributor interest internationally has ICS projecting worldwide distribution by year's end.
In addition to innovative products, the progressive California start-up also founded LOCK SMART: The National Campaign Against Bicycle Theft. LOCK SMART is the nation's only comprehensive theft prevention program to aid cyclists and law enforcement in combating bicycle theft. LOCK SMART establishes the first inter-Crime Prevention Unit communication network and provides a forum for exchange of problems and solutions from departments across the country.
ICS initiated a nationwide survey of bicycle theft on America's campuses. Co-sponsored by the National Crime Prevention Institute (NCPI) and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), the survey indicates that theft has increased 60 percent on college campuses since 1989.
