 INSURANCE CLAIMS SETTLEMENT PROCESS BEGINS IN FLORIDA
 AS ADDITIONAL ADJUSTERS ARRIVE AND CLAIMS CENTERS OPEN
 NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 1,500 insurance company claims adjusters from across the country are arriving in South Florida to speed the claims settlement process, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).
 The company claims adjusters, many equipped with laptop computers and portable telephones, will start writing checks today to pay the costs of temporary housing for people left homeless by the storm and begin the rebuilding of damaged homes and businesses. Many companies will be opening special claims centers to assist their policyholders.
 The company adjusters from out of state will reinforce the hundreds of company adjusters normally in Florida. Additional adjusters are being held in reserve for deployment to the Gulf Coast or to supplement the force in Florida if needed.
 The I.I.I. offers the following suggestions if your property has been damaged:
 -- Be prepared to give your agent a description of your damage: The agent or company representative will report the loss immediately to your insurance company or to a qualified adjuster who will call on you as soon as possible to inspect the damage. Be sure to give your agent a telephone number where the adjuster can contact you.
 -- Protect your home from further damage. Make whatever temporary repairs you can. Cover broken windows and holes in your roof and walls. Your insurance company will reimburse you for reasonable expenses in making temporary repairs to property damaged by insured perils.
 -- Do what you can to salvage and protect damaged building equipment.
 -- If you feel it is necessary, secure a detailed estimate for permanent repairs from a reliable contractor and give it to the adjuster when he arrives. The estimate should contain: detailed specifications of the proposed repairs, detailed repair cost prices and replacement prices.
 -- Take photos of the damaged areas. These will help you with the presentation of your claim and will assist the adjuster in his investigation of your claim.
 -- Prepare a detailed inventory of all damaged or destroyed personal property for the adjuster. Be sure to keep a copy. Your list should be as complete as you can make it and should include: description of the item (and number, if more than one), date of purchase or approximate age, cost at time of purchase and estimated replacement cost today.
 -- Collect cancelled checks, invoices, receipts or other papers that will assist the adjuster in obtaining the value of the destroyed property.
 -- Obtain repair estimates for furniture or other personal property that can be repaired economically.
 -- If you must leave your home, be sure it is secured and protected from further damage. Leave a note on your front door or other conspicuous place, advising where you can be reached.
 Serious Losses Will Be Given Priority
 Even with many additional adjusters, it will take time to process the thousands upon thousands of damage claims being filed. If your home has been destroyed, or yours is a serious case, tell your insurance agent that you need help. He will do all he can to assure your loss is given priority.
