INSURANCE CLAIMS ADJUSTERS ON SCENE IN LOS ANGELES
Adjusters representing hundreds of insurance companies have begun

settling insurance claims resulting from the rioting in Los Angeles.
Standard property insurance policies provide coverage for losses from fire and riot, including looting. These policies are available from individual insurance companies and a state-sanctioned pool of insurance companies serving high risk areas called the California FAIR Plan.
No official estimate of insurance losses from the riots in Los Angeles is available at this time as adjusters were not able to enter many riot-affected areas until this Monday. Insured losses are likely to exceed those of the Watts riots in 1965 which totaled about $183 million in today's dollars -- the most costly riot in U.S. history when measured in those terms.
If you would like to send reporters and camera crews to accompany adjusters working in Los Angeles neighborhoods, contact: Patty Lombard, Western Insurance Information Service, 213-783-5333. She can provide media with the latest information on the insurance industry response in Los Angeles.
For background information on the insurance industry's role in providing private-sector dollars to rebuild communities recovering from riot as well as major disasters such as catastrophic hurricanes, hailstorms and fires, contact Sean Mooney or Cary Schneider at the Insurance Information Institute, 800-331-9146.
