INNS AND OUTS Jonathan Trew tracks down some new places to try out; Going out.

The Arches in Glasgow is well known for hosting some of the city's wildest club nights and most exciting gigs.

But since it is Valentine's night tonight they have turned down the banging tunes, swapped disco lights for candles and laid on a special menu in the cafe bar and restaurant.

After a glass of Kir Royale, the menu starts with options such as an oyster mushroom and ginger broth studded with spiced butternut dumplings. Among the main courses is a supreme of chicken stuffed with a wild mushroom mousse while one of the desserts is a lime cheesecake and chilli jelly which means caution may be required if after dinner tonsil hockey is on the menu.

Dinner costs pounds 22.95 and includes tea or coffee. If you want to ensure the meal begins with your hearts pumping you could visit the Alien Wars experience in the cellars of The Arches beforehand.

Nothing is more likely to guarantee that your girlfriend will hold you tight than being attacked by extraterrestrials with acid for blood.

If you want to push the boat out head for the Ardanaiseig Hotel on Loch Awe.

They are running a Valentine's package that includes arrival by steamboat, champagne, oysters served by your own butler and a stay in their converted Boat Shed on the water's edge. Every night, a five-course gourmet menu is served in the hotel dining room.

Prepared by head chef Gary Goldie, typical dishes might include Inverawe smoked trout or Aberdeen Angus beef Wellington.

Running until next Friday, the two-day Valentine package with all the frills won't leave much change from a heart-stopping pounds 1000.

No-one said love was cheap but, for those of us who don't have that sort of dough to blow, dinner is a much less scary pounds 45 a head.

In Edinburgh, Iggs on Jeffrey Street is celebrating San Valentin with a large helping of Spanish passion.

Six courses of delicacies come matched with wines chosen by el patron Iggy Campos. Among the goodies on offer are a king scallop risotto, a seafood chowder and luxury pork. Dessert is a tart from Santiago - which I'm too polite to make any jokes about. A night of Latin-loving is pounds 50 a head with wine.
