INNS AND OUTS; Jonathan Trew tracks down some new places to try out.

Taking its name from the line of latitude that Edinburgh sits on, 56 North is a new bar on the city's West Crosscauseway.

If it ever stops raining then the outside seating will be a great spot for a pint but failing that the interior is pretty stylish as well. Formerly the Human Be-In (geddit?), the new venture has kept the big booths that made the old joint a hit but given everything else a thorough revamp. New table tops, a different bar and fantoosh new lighting mean that it looks very different from its former guise. As well as a cocktail list with an emphasis on gin, the owners have introduced a fresh menu.

Alongside snacks such as nachos and chicken wings, the kitchen is kept busy serving salads, gourmet burgers, stuffed pitta breads and old favourites like sausage and champ.

Prices range from pounds 3 for a bowl of soup to a tenner for the sirloin steak.

Stonehaven is feeling a little warmer after Zara's Brasserie started dishing up the dhansaks on the town's Allardice Street.

The Indian diner likes to give its customers a wide choice. There are over 30 starters on offer and I ran out of fingers and toes long before counting a fraction of the main courses on the menu.

From fiery vindaloos to creamy butter chicken tikka via veggie dishes like the egg and cauliflower, Zara's has a menu that is only slightly shorter than War and Peace. If that amount of choice is confusing then the set meal for two at pounds 29.95 should make decision making a little easier.

It might sound like an Eighties nitespot but Rumours is a new Malaysian diner on Glasgow's Bath Street.

Malaysia's food has been flavoured by its neighbours so Thai and Chinese dishes crop up on the menu along with specialities such as beef rendang, a sort of dry curry.

Open all day, seven days a week, Rumours runs a three-course pounds 6.50 lunch which offers plenty of choice. Satay chicken, pork chop rice and Thai Green curry are all among the options. On the main menu, dishes cost between pounds 7.50 and a tenner.
