 INGRES DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AVAILABLE
 ON CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTERS
Marriage of Supercomputing Power and High-Performance
Data Management Means Faster Solutions, Product Development
EAGAN, Minn., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR), announced today that it has integrated the industry- leading performance of its supercomputers with the powerful data storage capability of INGRES, a leading relational database management system, on the full CRAY Y-MP product line. This capability will allow users to manage data -- a significant component in large-scale problem solving -- with the speed and power available only on Cray Research supercomputers.
"With large computations, like those run by our commercial and government customers, come vast amounts of data," said Sara Graffunder, senior director of Applications at Cray Research. "Faster data management can ultimately lead to faster solutions. Our customers recognize this and are requesting a data management capability on their Cray Research systems. Today, we are responding with INGRES."
The INGRES system offers an easy-to-use, time-saving method for storing, accessing, transferring, retrieving, and updating data. With INGRES functionality on Cray Research systems, users will be able to apply the world's largest memories -- up to 32 gigabytes -- high I/O bandwidth, and superior computational performance of Cray Research systems to data management.
"Data management has become an increasingly crucial element in time- to-market for new products," said Graffunder. "Our customers have learned over the last ten years that they spend a great deal of time sharing data throughout the organization. Reducing that time is now a key to success for any enterprise.
"In addition, customers want to integrate their large scientific and engineering applications in a way that allows them to pass data among these applications in a more transparent fashion than in the past. Using INGRES, the analysis done on Cray Research supercomputers can now be integrated into the whole process of bringing an organization's products to market faster."
INGRES on Cray Research systems is based on the company's network supercomputing strategy, which allows users to solve large-scale problems from their desktop workstations by sending the problems to supercomputers or other appropriate computing resources on a network. The need for sharing data in such heterogenous networks is leading more organizations to look for ways to standardize data management across all machines, including Cray Research supercomputers. Network supercomputing is readily supported by the client/server architecture of INGRES.
Cray Research supercomputers are compatible with virtually all UNIX- based mainframes, minicomputers, and workstations. INGRES operates on approximately 40 platforms and Cray Research systems are now the most powerful platform for the software system. The user interface for INGRES on Cray Research systems has the same look and feel as INGRES software on other computers. Through the INGRES Gateways, users can also access data from databases other than INGRES, such as IBM's DB2.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
