ING GROUP CHAIRMAN RESIGNS; A.G. JACOBS APPOINTED AS SUCCESSOR
AMSTERDAM, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Internationale Nederlanden Group today announced, also on behalf of the boards of directors of Internationale Nederlanden Insurance and Internationale Nederlanden Bank, that W.E. Scherpenhuijsen Rom has resigned as chairman of the executive board of ING Group as of today. The board of directors has accepted his resignation.
The current vice chairman of the executive board of ING Group and chairman of the executive board of ING Insurance, A.G. Jacobs, has been appointed as Mr. Scherpenhuijsen Rom's successor as of today. G.J.A. van der Lugt, chairman of the executive board of ING Bank, has been appointed as vice chairman of the executive board of ING Group.
The motives which have led Scherpenhuijsen Rom to this decision are given in his letter to the employees of ING Group.
The board of directors of ING Group has expressed its gratitude to Mr. Scherpenhuijsen Rom for his many and extraordinary merits for the bank and for the group.
Following is the text of Scherpenhuijsen Rom's letter to all ING Group employees:
I herewith inform you that I will resign as chairman of the executive board of Internationale Nederlanden Group as of today. I took this decision last weekend after consultation with the board of directors and the executive board of ING Group.
I have come to my decision as the negative publicity concerning our organization -- following all the reports about the resignations of some executive board members and general managers of the bank -- had become strongly focused on my own person. The allegations addressed to me are detrimental to the group and my position as chairman. The fact that the aforementioned publications are based on anonymous sources has affected me deeply. I sincerely hope that my resignation will put an end to this sometimes biased reporting.
In addition, I have been considering a premature resignation for some time because of family reasons. The constant flow of negative publicity has accelerated my decision to resign.
The board of directors respects my decision and has accepted my resignation.
I realize that my resignation will come as a shock to many of you. Therefore, I would like to emphasize my great confidence in the future of Internationale Nederlanden Group, in my successor, my fellow executive board members and all employees. It goes without saying that I will follow the further development of ING Group with great interest.
I would like to express my gratitude to each and everyone with whom I have been privileged to cooperate for many years for the good and amicable contacts.
