INDSPEC TO REOPEN HIGHER QUALITY TUSCALOOSA SODIUM SULFITE PLANT; EXPANSION MAKES COMPANY LARGEST NORTH AMERICAN SUPPLIER

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- INDSPEC Chemical Corporation announced today that it would start up its existing sodium sulfite production facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The reopening will make the company the largest sodium sulfite supplier in North America. With modification to take place in the next two months, the Tuscaloosa plant will produce sodium sulfite at higher levels of purity than before.
The plant, which has been idle since 1991, will be in operation by January 1994, according to INDSPEC. The facility is capable of producing 70,000 tons of sodium sulfite annually for use as an anti-chlor and oxygen scavenger in water treatment and as a raw material in specialty paper pulping.
According to INDSPEC officials, market opportunities and the recent favorable pricing for raw materials used in sodium sulfite production influenced the decision to reopen the facility.
"We have been able to gain access to a very high quality, continual supply of caustic soda, our basic raw material requirement, at reasonable prices," INDSPEC President Frank Spinola said. "This will enable us to be very competitive in the marketplace with a high standard of quality product."
INDSPEC will continue to sell sodium sulfite obtained as a by-product from its Petrolia, Pa., resorcinol (rubber tire adhesive) facility. Historically, that sodium sulfite is sold for use in kraft paper and for corrugated media.
The Tuscaloosa plant will be totally dedicated to sodium sulfite production and will employ 11 people.
INDSPEC was founded in 1988 as a management-led buyout of the Industrial Specialty Chemicals Division of Koppers Company, Inc. The company, with its plant in Petrolia, is the world's largest producer of resorcinol, a chemical used in bonding tire chords to rubber and used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, dyestuffs and other products.
