INDIANAPOLIS-AREA FORD DEALERS REPORT STRONG 1992 SALES

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The 1992 calendar year ended on a high note as Ford dealers in the Indianapolis area reported double- digit increases in car and truck sales for the year.
Car sales in Ford Division's Cincinnati Region, which covers Indianapolis, rose 18.3 percent over 1991 levels, while truck sales climbed 15.4 percent compared to 1991. Ford dealers in the Cincinnati Region sold 48,181 cars and 69,113 trucks in 1992.
Joseph King, Ford Division's Cincinnati Region sales manager, said car sales were paced by America's best-selling car, the Ford Taurus, up a whopping 323 percent last month, and 51 percent higher than the 1991 calendar year. Cincinnati-area Ford dealers sold a record 2,192 Taurus models in December. Nationwide, Ford dealers sold 409,751 Taurus vehicles in 1992.
"While 1992 was another challenging year for both Ford and the industry, our company achieved a number of significant successes," King said. "Initial public acceptance of our new 1993 products demonstrates that Ford dealers can capture a growing share of the market in the months ahead.
"Moreover," King continued, "the recent rebound in consumer confidence suggests a continuing economic recovery, which should translate into an opportunity to carve a bigger slice of a bigger pie."
In 1992, Ford Crown Victoria sales climbed 61 percent over 1991 levels, while Ford Tempo sales jumped 21 percent. Ford Mustang sales increased nine percent.
On the truck side of the business, the Ford F-Series pickup reigns as America's best selling vehicle, car or truck, for the 11th straight year. At the end of the 1992 calendar year, sales of the F-Series in the Cincinnati Region climbed 16 percent above 1991 levels.
Ford Aerostar sales finished 26 percent ahead of 1991, and sales of the spectacularly successful Ford Explorer rounded out 1992 at a level 31 percent higher than in 1991.
King said, "Ford Motor Company was the only major manufacturer, domestic or foreign, to expand both car and truck market share. The total vehicle market share (cars and trucks) rose by more than 1.5 percentage points, reaching its highest level since 1978."
