INDEPENDENT PWB ASSEMBLY COMPANIES ACHIEVE RECORD REVENUES

LINCOLNWOOD, Ill., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The independent PWB assembly industry achieved record revenues, growing over 25 percent in 1992 according to data released by The Institute for Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits (IPC).
"This is the sixth straight year of double-digit sales growth for the independent electronics assembly industry and is one of the fastest growing segments of the entire electronics industry," according to Anthony Hilvers, director of marketing research for IPC.
According to the IPC, the independent assembly or Electronics Manufacturing Services Industry (EMSI) exceeded $6 billion in 1992. "We see this double-digit growth to continue in 1993," according to Hilvers. "For a number of financial and technical reasons, original equipment manufacturers continued to outsource their electronics assembly to independent assembly companies in 1992, and we believe this trend will continue."
The IPC reported that in their Monthly Statistical Program for Electronics Manufacturing Services Industry (EMSI) providers, the purchase of components and printed boards grew over 75 percent in the fourth quarter of 1992 compared to 1991, a leading indicator for continued growth in 1993.
EMSI companies, along with traditional printed circuit assembly and test services, are providing design services, global procurement, cost reduction, advanced technology access, dedicated plant setup and management and distribution.
The IPC, with over 1800 member companies worldwide, represents manufacturers and users of printed boards, flat cable, discrete wiring, hybrid circuits, and companies that assemble printed boards. Membership also includes suppliers to the industry, colleges and universities, and over 60 government agencies.
