INDEPENDENCE BLUE CROSS AND PENNSYLVANIA BLUE SHIELD SPONSOR ICARE VAN

PHILADELPHIA, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of their commitment to the program, Independence Blue Cross and Pennsylvania Blue Shield will be sponsoring the ICARE van.
The van will travel to the south, southwest and west sections of Philadelphia and will be staffed by nursing students from Thomas Jefferson University.
On Friday, July 16, Independence Blue Cross and Pennsylvania Blue Shield will take the van to the Paschall Apartments, 7212 Woodland Ave. from 4 to 8 p.m. Employees of Independence Blue Cross will be on hand to give out balloons, do face painting and distribute gifts to the children who will have been immunized. In addition, Independence Blue Cross and Pennsylvania Blue Shield's interactive robotic mascot, the Caring Coach, will be on hand as will "Mystique the Magician." All residents of south, southwest and west Philadelphia are encouraged to bring their children for immunization.
The "Summer of Service" is a pilot project, designed by the Clinton administration, to demonstrate the need for, and potential of, national service initiatives. The project is coordinated by the Commission for National and Community Service. Philadelphia was one of 11 cities to receive funding from the commission.
Philadelphia has seen an increase in diseases which had previously been under control. For example, in 1986, there were 16 reported cases of measles. From 1990 to 1991, there were 1,559 reported cases of measles and nine deaths.
While the primary focus of ICARE is to immunize children, it will also provide children and their families with information on the Caring Foundation and the new state-funded CHIP of PA. Both of these initiatives provide health insurance to children of low-income and working parents.
For further information regarding the dates and locations of the free immunizations, call 215-466-2100.
