IN THE FRAME - Stephen Tompkinson; MONDAY.

Image: Likeable bloke next-door.

Best Known For: Paying Father Peter Clifford in Ballykissangel.

Early Life: Born on October 15, 1965 in Stockton-On-Tees. Three years later, his family moved to Scarborough before settling in St Anne's in Lancashire. At first he considered a career as a priest, but chose acting instead, inspired by his grandfather who was a massive Laurel and Hardy fan.

Career: Tained at the Central School of Speech and Drama alongside James Nesbitt and Rufus Sewell. Since graduating in 1988 he's rarely been out of work, appearing on stage, in films and on radio.

However, he's best known for his TV work, including stints in Drop the Dead Donkey and All Quiet on the Preston Front. It was Ballykissangel which made him a major star, and he followed that with Grafters, In Deep and sitcom Mr Charity.

Love Life: Married a radio producer in 1989, but the couple divorced amicably three years later. His relationship with Ballykissangel co-star Dervla Kirwan hit the headlines, and they remained together for four years. He's now happy with Nicci Taylor, mother of his 18-month-old daughter Daisy.

Don't Mention: The Press. Since becoming a star, his life has constantly made front-page news.

Quote: " keep getting these posh people to play when really I'm a nice northern bloke adored by my grandma."

Tonight: Mr Charity, BBC2, 10pm.
