IN DEFENSE OF PEAS! CAMPBELL'S SOUP CELEBRATES NATIONAL SPLIT PEA AND LENTIL WEEK, NOV. 8-13

CAMDEN, N.J., Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- George Bush went down in history as the president who "bagged" broccoli.
Well on her way to notoriety as the First Lady who deplores peas, Hillary Rodham Clinton recently discounted a significant piece of culinary and cultural history. To celebrate National Split Pea and Lentil week (Nov. 8-13), Campbell's has compiled the following facts that reveal the pea's place of prominence in history, as well as on the dinner table.
Peas are popular! Campbell's Soup uses 30 million pounds of peas every year to make soup.
Campbell's sells more than 35 million cans of its popular Split Pea with Ham Soup and Green Pea Soup.
The Tampa/St. Petersburg region eats more Campbell's Green Pea Soup per capita than any other area in the U.S. Campbell's Pea with Ham is most popular per capita in Spokane, Wash.
Dating back to the Bronze Age, peas are one of the oldest crops farmed by man. Early peas were as large as marbles. Archaeologists believe they were roasted and peeled before eaten.
During the Middle Ages, dried peas largely took the place of beans.
Dried peas were an important winter vegetable before refrigeration was invented.
References to peas have found their way in popular fairy tales ("The Princess and the Pea"), cartoons (Popeye's baby is named "Sweet Pea"), and expressions, i.e., "fog as thick as pea soup" ... "like two peas in a pod" ... "tearing up the pea patch."
