IMPROPERLY TREATED SHRIMP SEIZED BY DEPUTY U.S. MARSHALS
BOSTON, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Attorney A. John Pappalardo announced today that an estimated $2.75 million dollars worth of shrimp were seized this morning by Deputy U.S. Marshals for the District of Massachusetts because the shrimp had been improperly treated with saccharin. Over 170,000 cases of shrimp were seized. The cases, and the plastic bags contained therein, were labelled in various ways, including in part the following: "8/3 lb. Rymer...Mini Breaded Shrimp" and "Kraft... Foodservice... Preferred... 6/3 lbs. Individually Quick Frozen Shrimp."
Previously, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Office of the Inspector General of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), U.S. Customs and local law enforcement agents participated in a search of New England Shrimp Company's premises in Ayer, where the shrimp are located. When testing of the shrimp after the search confirmed the presence of saccharin, the National Marine Fisheries division of the Department of Commerce ordered the shrimp held, "red tagging" the containers to indicate they were not fit for sale.
The case is part of a continuing effort by the FDA, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Attorney's Office to ensure that consumers know what they are purchasing and to make sure that seafood sold to consumers is safe, wholesome and meets all applicable regulations. In this case, while saccharin is a recognized food additive under certain circumstances, its use by New England Shrimp did not comply with federal regulations.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, with DCIS and Customs, and is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Kanwit of Pappalardo's Civil Enforcement and Defense Bureau.
