IMPORTANCE OF HOME CARE IN HELPING NATION MEET HEALTHCARE REFORM GOALS NOTED DURING NATIONAL HOME CARE WEEK; SURVEY SUPPORTS ROLE OF HOMECARE

WALTHAM, Mass., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Quality, cost-effective homecare services can make a significant contribution to the nation's healthcare reform goals by providing an alternative to more expensive inpatient services, said Peter F. Spears, president of NMC Homecare, a leading provider of home infusion and respiratory therapy services, who urges greater awareness of the value of home care services during National Home Care Week, Nov. 28 to Dec. 6.
"Home care not only reduces costs but also empowers patients to learn more about their illness and to be more involved in their personal care," said Spears.
Preliminary results of a survey conducted by CPR Medical Marketing and NMC Homecare indicate that over 80 percent of managed care organizations surveyed are interested in developing alliances with a single homecare provider for a multitude of services. Respondents included executives and medical directors of managed care organizations.
"Managed care plans recognize the inherent value in homecare services," says Spears, who notes that enrollment in these plans continues to grow nationwide. "With managed care organizations taking center stage in the healthcare delivery system of the future, home care is assured a significant role in the post reform environment."
National Home Care Week is celebrated annually the week following Thanksgiving and seeks to increase public awareness of home health care service and programs available in communities throughout the United States.
Headquartered in Waltham, NMC Homecare is a subsidiary of National Medical Care, Inc., a Grace health care company.
