IMM RECEIVES FOLLOW-ON CONTRACT FROM U.S. ARMY
TO PROVIDE TACTICAL DIGITAL CELLULAR
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- International Mobile Machines Corporation (NASDAQ: IMMC) announced today that it has received a follow-on contract from the U.S. Army to provide a specially modified Ultraphone digital radiotelephone system to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating commercial digital cellular technology and know-how with the current U.S. Army Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE).
MSE is a multibillion-dollar program which provides secure tactical communications in a rapidly moving battlefield environment such as Desert Storm. Under the terms of the contract, IMM will explore with the Army the feasibility of employing its Ultraphone technology to enhance the performance of MSE which is widely used throughout the Army today. This is the same technology that will be used in the U.S. AMPS-D cellular program.
The Ultraphone equipment will be modified to allow multiple radio base stations (cells) to be homed off a single MSE network interface and to permit mobile subscriber handoff between these cells. The cell equipment will be modified to transparently interface to the existing MSE network on a per-line basis. This will significantly enhance the Army's tactical mobile communications capability as well as allowing the system to provide a wireless command post capability using either fixed or mobile Ultraphone subscriber units.
This contract has been awarded to IMM under the federal government's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The government's basic objective in this program is to turn the research and development done by SBIR contract awardees into commercial success.
