IMCO PURCHASES CALIFORNIA ALUMINUM RECYCLING PLANT

IRVING, Texas, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- IMCO Recycling Inc. (NYSE: IMR) today announced that it has acquired a Corona, Calif. aluminum recycling plant from Thakar Aluminum Corporation. The facility has an annual capacity of 100 million pounds.
Total value of the transaction is approximately $5.0 million.
IMCO, the world's largest aluminum recycler, will see its 1994 annual aluminum processing capacity rise by 12.5 percent to 900 million pounds as a result of the Corona acquisition. In addition, the purchase gives IMCO its first plant in the Western U.S. and increases its number of production facilities to six.
Ralph L. Cheek, IMCO's chairman and chief executive officer, said the acquisition "is a very important step for us because it increases our capacity and creates more U.S. and international business opportunities. The Corona plant is specially designed for recycling of used beverage cans (UBCs), and the Los Angeles area is one of the world's largest generators of UBCs."
Most of IMCO's activities involve "tolling" or the recycling of customer-owned materials in return for a processing fee. Cheek said the company intends to operate the Corona plant in this manner, recycling UBCs owned by aluminum rolling mills and returning ingot to their U.S. and Pacific Rim facilities.
"This plant is not now operating near full capacity," Cheek said, "and we must develop additional customers before it can add to our profitability. We believe that can be accomplished in a fairly short time."
IMCO Recycling processes zinc and magnesium as well as aluminum. Its production facilities are located in Morgantown, Ky.; Rockwood, Tenn.; Sapulpa, Okla.; Uhrichsville, Ohio; and Adrian, Mich. IMCO Recycling's headquarters office is in Irving, Texas.
