IMCERA'S MALLINCKRODT MEDICAL UNIT ACQUIRES FRENCH MEDICAL TUBE MANUFACTURER

 IMCERA'S MALLINCKRODT MEDICAL UNIT ACQUIRES
 FRENCH MEDICAL TUBE MANUFACTURER
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- IMCERA Group Inc. (NYSE: IMA) announced today that its Mallinckrodt Medical unit's French subsidiary, Laboratoire Mallinckrodt Medical S.A., has acquired Novatech Laboratories, a leading European manufacturer of polyurethane medical devices. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Located in Vitrolles, France, Novatech Laboratories makes polyurethane tubes for tracheostomy and gastroenterology procedures, as well as drainage systems. The company's management and operations will be incorporated into Mallinckrodt Medical's European anesthesiology division, which will manufacture and market the Novatech product line worldwide.
"This acquisition provides an excellent opportunity to gain leading technology in polyurethane tubing extrusion, diversify our current product line and strengthen our position in the global medical products market," said Robert G. Moussa, group vice president, international, for Mallinckrodt Medical.
Moussa noted that most medical plastic tubing is currently made from polyvinyl chloride, but that for given applications, polyurethane is the preferred plastic because of its greater durability and inertness.
Tracheostomy tubes are inserted into a patient's trachea, or windpipe, for airway management, while gastroenterology tubes are used in procedures relating to the stomach and intestines. Combined with other drainage systems, these products currently represent an estimated $120 million market in Europe. Polyurethane accounts for a relatively small part of the total market, but significant growth is anticipated.
Novatech operated as a small, privately held company which relied on outside distributors to market its products. Mallinckrodt Medical worked with the company for five years and represented 50 percent of its sales.
Mallinckrodt Medical's anesthesiology division is the world leader in tracheal tubes, core body temperature monitoring equipment and related products.
Headquartered in St. Louis, Mallinckrodt Medical also is a worldwide leader in products for radiology, cardiology, nuclear medicine and other critical care procedures. It achieved net sales and operating earnings of $513 million and $87 million, respectively, in fiscal 1991.
IMCERA, a Fortune 300 company with net sales of more than $1.6 billion in fiscal 1991, has two other international, technology- based businesses -- Mallinckrodt Specialty Chemicals of Chesterfield, Mo., and Pitman-Moore of Lake Forest, Ill.
