ILLINOIS CIRCUIT COURT JUDGE RULES ON CATERPILLAR PETITION
PEORIA, Ill., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- An Illinois Circuit Court judge ruled today that sufficient cause exists to require the UAW to show why it isn't in contempt of court.
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) last week asked that Peoria-area UAW Local 974 and 18 union members be found in civil contempt for violating a March 9 injunction restricting picket line activities.
Judge William Young scheduled the contempt hearing for 9:30 a.m. May 18 at the Tazewell County Courthouse in Pekin.
Caterpillar's petition seeks a civil contempt finding against the local union and 18 individuals. Actions of the individuals, according to Caterpillar, included blocking gates, threats of bodily harm, exceeding the limit of 10 pickets per gate, and other acts in defiance of the injunction.
The union representatives' actions are a "willful, indirect, civil contempt" of the court's previous order, the petition states. It cites numerous incidents that have occurred at the East Peoria, Mossville, and Mapleton, Ill., plants.
