ILA RANK-AND-FILE MEMBERS APPROVE CONTRACT EXTENSION

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO from Maine to Texas today ratified a two-year extension to the current Master Contract Agreement which will now be in effect until Sept. 30, 1996.
"I'm pleased to report that our rank-and-file members accepted the recommendation of the Executive Council and approved the two-year extension," said John Bowers from the International's headquarters in New York. "This extension is beneficial to both labor and management and brings peace and stability to the industry for several years to come."
The current four-year Master Agreement was entering its final year on Oct. 1, 1993. When it was negotiated in 1990, it called for increases in wages of a dollar an hour for each year of the contract. In exchange for an additional two years on the current Master Contract, the parties agreed to apply the fourth-year dollar increase into a fringe benefit fund.
In addition, the Carriers Container Council and four employer groups -- New York Shipping Association; Boston Shipping Association; Southeast Florida Employers Port Association and the Council of North Atlantic Shipping Association -- agreed that local agreements are also extended for two years from Oct. 1, 1994 to Sept. 30, 1996.
