IGI ANNOUNCES NEW NOVASOMER PATENT

BUENA, N.J., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- IGI, Inc. (AMEX: IG) today reported that U.S. patent No. 5,219,538 "Gas and Oxygen Carrying Lipid Vesicles" has been issued by the United States Patent Office. This patent provides flexibility in the types of useful materials, in this case, perfluorocarbon compounds, that can be encapsulated with the NOVASOMER lipid vesicle technology.
Perfluorocarbons (PFC's) have been widely used as carriers of oxygen and other gases, as well as radioimaging agents. They are inert materials: neither water nor lipid soluble. Certain PFC's have been used in oxygen delivery to tissues as substitutes for hemoglobin. Other have been used in cosmetics. Due to their unique behavioral characteristics, unencapsulated perfluoro-carbons are difficult to apply to the skin, to swallow or inject.
The ability of NOVASOMER technology to encapsulate these materials at high concentrations, in stable forms, adds a number of advantages to PFC's. PFC's cannot be encapsulated by ordinary liposomes or other microencapsulation technologies, and emulsification of these materials is difficult, the company believes.
"We are pleased the United States Patent Office has granted us yet another patent in our portfolio of NOVASOMER applications. We believe it is in the best interests of our shareholders to continue to file patents in order to protect our technology, and their investment in IGI," the company said.
A total of 23 U.S. patents and 25 foreign patents covering NOVASOMER and UltraspongeR technologies have been issued to date. An additional 74 patents are pending at home and abroad.
IGI is a diversified company engaged in the development, production and marketing of animal care products, cosmetics, consumer products and human pharmaceuticals.
