IGI ANNOUNCES AWARDS OF THREE NEW UNITED STATES PATENTS

BUENA, N.J., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- IGI, Inc. (AMEX: IGI) today announced the award of three new patents based upon its Novasome(R) and Ultrasponge(TM) technologies to one of its subsidiaries. The United States Patent Office has issued Patent Number 5,234,915 entitled "Biodegradable Gel," Patent Number 5,234,621 entitled "Rinse Free Shampoo Containing Cross-Linked Carboxymethylcellulose" and Patent Number 5,234,767 entitled "Hybrid Paucilamellar Lipid Vesicles." United States patents issued to IGI and its subsidiaries now total 26.
The biodegradable gel patent describes a new gel-like complex carbohydrate prepared by using antibiotics, antifungal compounds and other complex organic ring structures to cross-link carboxymethylcellulose ("CMC"). The resulting gel can be used as a non- irritating prolonged release vehicle for tetracyclines, quinone antibiotics and conazole antifungal compounds. In addition, these preparations have a number of other uses as a carrier and barrier, and sponge for absorption of fluids and particles such as bacteria and blood cells.
The Rinse Free Shampoo patent covers IGI's "Apply & Dry"(TM) shampoo, shaving gel, and body lather product line. These make use of the cross linked CMC biodegradable superabsorbent (Ultrasponge) which leaves less greasy and gritty residue than conventional rinse-free shampoos. "Apply & Dry" is particularly useful in situations where clean water is not readily available such as man made and natural disasters. It is being sold to the home health marketplace by the Eckerd Drug Company and others.
The Hybrid Lipid Vesicle patent uses Novasomes which incorporate small amounts of phospholipids and/or glycolipids along with other vesicle components for uses such as transportation of vesicles through membranes or permeation of the skin. The company believes that hybrid vesicles such as these are well suited to solving the problems of skin delivery and cross membrane transport of both oil soluble and water soluble materials.
IGI is a diversified company engaged in the development, production and marketing of animal care products, cosmetics, consumer products and human pharmaceuticals.
