 IGENE BIOTECHNOLOGY, INC., AWARDED PATENT
COLUMBIA, Md., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- IGENE Biotechnology, Inc.,

today announced it has received a U.S. patent for its process to produce high concentrations of the pigment astaxanthin in Phaffia yeast.
This naturally occurring pigment is required in the diet of salmonid fish to produce the characteristic pink flesh of wild salmon. The current worldwide market for astaxanthin is estimated to be $100 million per year. IGENE, which has no manufacturing facilities of its own, began commercial scale production of its natural feed supplement AstaXin earlier this year at a U.S.-based contract manufacturing facility. The company hopes to improve manufacturing efficiency by consolidating all aspects of its manufacturing process at a centralized location at a plant of its own and/or through a partnership with one of several companies which have expressed interest in manufacturing or marketing the product.
