IF YOU CALL 999 YOU WILL DIE; What man with meat cleaver told kids.

Byline: ERYL CRUMP Daily Post Chief Reporter

A MAN who brandished a knife and a meat cleaver in front of a group of teenagers has been sent to prison for 18 months.

When one of the youngsters started calling the police on her mobile phone, Geoffrey Ernest Ross told them: "If you call 999 you will die, die, die."

The 50-year-old had earlier approached the group, who were listening to music near Porth Eirias on Colwyn Bay prom on June 6, and produced a lock knife.

When he returned later that day he was dressed in black and carrying a 10-inch bladed cleaver, Caernarfon Crown Court heard.

Ross, of Greenfield Road, Colwyn Bay, admitted two charges of possessing a bladed instrument and affray when he appeared at Llandudno Magistrates Court last month.

Hannah Horton, prosecutor, told yesterday's hearing the youngsters, aged 16 and 17, had noticed Ross in the same area with a group of children aged between six and 14.

She said: "At one stage the defendant came up to them and seemed angry and agitated and asked them what they were looking at.

"He brought out a knife and waved it about his head before leaving, taking the children with him."

Ms Horton said he later returned, this time on a bicycle, and pulled out the meat cleaver.

She said: "When asked why he had it, the defendant said 'for protection'. When one of the group said she was calling the police and was saying "nine, nine, nine" as she dialled, the defendant said "if you call 999 you will die, die, die."

Police were called and Ross fled before he was traced on CCTV cameras.

When officers called at his flat they found a meat cleaver and a lock knife.

Simon Killeen, defending, said Ross had attended court expecting an immediate custodial sentence.

He said: "The incident arose because he felt inflamatory words had been directed at him by the teenagers on the beach."

Judge Merfyn Hughes QC said: "Whether or not it was said, Ross went home and returned to the scene with the meat cleaver."

Jailed: Geoffrey Ross, 50
