Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) has recently announced that France's National Railway Company SNCF's new generation train operating company, iDTGV, has begun deploying rugged MC70 Enterprise Digital Assistants (EDAs) as part of a project which aims to provide secure online ticket purchases and improve customer service. The first 240 MC70 EDAs have been deployed on all iDTGV and ID NIGHT overnight train services. A further 60 MC70 mobile terminals will be made available to iDTGV staff as new train lines open, making a total of 300 devices deployed by the end of 2008.

The devices have been implemented as part of iDTGV's plan to make its service more competitive with airlines on the same routes. As part of this plan, the company recently launched its www.idtgv.com website, which in 2007 was used by more than 1.7 million travellers to purchase and print their tickets. The MC70 devices will complete the solution and will be used to scan the 2D bar code on each printed ticket to verify that the ticket is authentic and confirm that the passenger has boarded the train.

"Low-cost air operators have changed the landscape for middle-distance travel. iDTGV is committed to offering a service level that positions us competitively with all forms of transport. That includes ticket security as well as customer engagement, which means empowering out staff to answer customer questions on the spot," said Maria Harti, Director General of iDTGV. "It was therefore essential that we put technology in place that would allow us to provide this level of service, while also being easy for our employees to use, robust enough to withstand being used out on the platforms, and also cost effective."

The bar code data, which the rugged MC70 EDA collects as it scans each ticket, provides iDTGV staff with valuable information on each traveller, such as date of birth and travel preferences, enabling them to provide a more personal level of service. Customers can request a seat change easily and agents can provide customers with more attention, making their journey more enjoyable.

"iDTGV stands out from other forms of traditional transport, not only because it uses technology to offer different purchasing methods and competitive prices, but also because it has raised the bar and created a new, higher standard of service for train travel," said Antoine Fontanel, iDTGV Information Systems Director. "We selected the devices because of their user-friendliness, which meant staff needed less training and were able to use them productively much more quickly. The devices also had a long battery life which was important for staff checking tickets before customers board the train and had powerful Wi-Fi and GPRS communication features to transmit and receive data quickly."

Although iDTGV had been using Motorola's EDAs for several years, it chose to upgrade its devices so that it would have the latest technology and be able to offer its users a better service.

"We are delighted with our choice of the MC70 mobile terminals, especially their outstanding robustness which is essential to cope with the knocks and bumps of being out in the field. In addition, the maintenance service and technical support has been exceptional. In particular, the Motorola devzone website has been instrumental in allowing us to keep the terminals up-to-date with the latest software," said FrE[umlaut]dE[umlaut]ric Chofardet, iDTGV terminal deployment.
