IDLG official escapes unhurt in attacks.

KABUL (PAN): A senior Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) official on Tuesday claimed heavily armed insurgents twice attacked his motorcade in the central province of Maidan Wardak, but there were no casualties.

Dr. Farid Mamoonzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the rebels fired rockets and mortar shell at his five-vehicle convoy in the Aziz Qala area of Syedabad district on the Kabul-Kandahar highway. Some vehicles were hit with machine gun bullets, but no one was hurt, he said.

The convoy left central Ghazni province for Maidan Wardak on its way to Kabul and came under attack in the Taliban-infested area, he said.

Mamoonzai added the motorcade was attacked for a second time five kilometers from the scene. "The attackers used heavy weapons. One mortar shell missed my car and hit a tank," he said.

There was intense gunfire all around and he did not know if anyone was killed or wounded. Security guards escorting the convoy returned fire, he said.

The governor's spokesman, Shahidullah Shahid, said there were no casualties in the attacks. He said the rebels had torched a vehicle carrying fuel for foreign troops in the same area.

The IDLG official visited Ghazni to inaugurate some development projects there.
