IDEA ANNOUNCES WINDOWS GATEWAY TO CONNECT PC LANS AND MIDRANGE SNA NETWORKS

BILLERICA, Mass., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- IDEA today announced general availability of a new product that provides users of the Microsoft Windows operating system with simultaneous access to multiple IBM AS/400 and System 3X environments.
The new product, IDEAcomm Gateway 5250 for Windows, is a significant addition to IDEA's gateway and emulation product lines. It also extends IDEA's comprehensive strategy of meeting the needs of organizations that require connectivity between their PC LAN and SNA networks.
The new IDEAcomm Gateway is IDEA's first gateway product specifically targeted at Windows users. IDEAcomm Gateway 5250 for Windows supports the industry standard Novell IPX/SPX protocol. It provides SDLC or X.25 communications at speeds of up to 64 kbps per host link.

Client/Server Market Demands Connectivity For Its Windows Users
Demand for a Windows-based gateway application has been created by the proliferation of midrange compt?ers as corporate servers and Windows as the client-side environment.
Gateways allow PC users on a LAN to share access to server-based applications such as database and accounting packages while retaining individual PC functionality and the shared resources of the LAN. A "hot key" enables users to move quickly between PC, network, and server applications.
Until now, with DOS and OS/2 products, users were required to close Windows before midrange connectivity could begin and did not have the ease-of-use benefits associated with Windows. As a Windows application, the new IDEAcomm Gateway 5250 for Windows allows users to move quickly between PC and host applications, and transfer data with proper security clearance. With its support for dynamic data exchange (DDE), PC and host files can be linked and updated automatically. The point-and-click IDEApad and Hotspots features activate user-defined PC or host functions.
Installed in a server PC, the gateway provides host connectivity to PC LAN users for terminal and printer emulation, file transfers and other applications, Up to 128 concurrent PC users can be supported on a single server. Up to four host links can be connected to a single server and multiple servers can be configured on each LAN.
The IDEAcomm Gateway 5250 for Windows supports all the capabilities and services of IBM PC Support/400. It also supports the use of the fast, reliable IDEAlink file transfer and emulation program, which provides data sharing without making excessive demands on host, PC or LAN resources.
The IDEAcomm Gateway 5250 for Windows consists of an adapter card that lets the server PC accept multiple synchronous interfaces, plus client-based software for IBM 5250 terminal emulation and server- resident software to provide host communications support.

Worldwide Availability
In North American, list prices range from $3,495 for an 8-user license to $8,495 for 128 users. Several upgrade options are available for users of other IDEAcomm Gateway products. Additionally, in North America, IDEA offers IDEAcomm Gateway users a one-year limited warranty and free, 1-800 telephone support.
Outside of North America, pricing is determined on a country-by- country basis by IDEA's worldwide network of subsidiaries and distributors.
