IDEA'S SALES TO THE WASTE INDUSTRY INCREASE; FISCAL 1993 NINE-MONTH EARNINGS MATCH LAST YEAR'S RECORD RESULTS

TUKWILA, Wash., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Invention, Design, Engineering Associates Inc. (NASDAQ: IDEA), manufacturer electronic weighing systems for the trucking industry sold worldwide under the Structural Instrumentation brand name, today reported record net income for the first nine months of fiscal 1993, although profits were lower in the third quarter.
IDEA earned record net income of $270,180, or 11 cents per share, on revenues of $5.7 million for the first nine months of fiscal 1993, compared to net income of $249,000, or 11 cents per share, on revenues of $5.8 million in the like period a year ago. Sales for the nine months ended April 30, 1992, included $140,000 from the company's discontinued semiconductor business segment.
For the third quarter of fiscal 1993, ended April 30, IDEA earned $46,841, or 2 cents per share, on record revenues of $1.9 million. In last year's third quarter, the company reported a profit of $134,000, or 6 cents per share, on revenues of $1.72 million.
"Revenues began to accelerate in the third quarter as we started shipping IDEA's recently certified line of portable axle scales used for the enforcement of truck weight laws to state and municipal police agencies," said Jerry L. McCauley, president and chief executive officer. On Feb. 23, IDEA passed all the tests to gain approval for its line of portable weight enforcement axle scale systems.
"Third-quarter earnings were held down by, among other things, the costs of reorganizing and expanding IDEA's manufacturing operations and opening a new, full-time sales and service facility in Southern California to serve the area's refuse hauling market estimated to be over $10 million," McCauley noted.
The increasing worldwide emphasis on reducing the "waste stream" has lead refuse handlers to take advantage of IDEA's payload management systems. Two of the top six leaders in the waste industry and many municipalities, including The City of San Antonio, Texas, are among IDEA's major customers for its on-board, electronic weighing systems for the refuse industry.
"This year, we also have been beefing up the company's management, sales and service to address the vast potential market we see for electronic, on-board weighing systems in the U.S., Canada and overseas," McCauley added. "This has had the effect of limiting immediate earnings growth even as the company's revenues are beginning to ramp up."
IDEA is a recognized global leader in on-board weighing technology for the transportation industry. On April 15-16, the company met with its international distributors in Vilamoura, Portugal, to conduct a technical seminar on the company's European OIML certification, ISO 9000, Class III On-Board Weighing, and recent product improvements.
Distributors from Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, The United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia paid their own expenses to participate in this conference which focused on identifying and targeting vertical world markets where IDEA's electronic weighing systems can dominate.
Invention, Design, Engineering Associates Inc. manufactures electronic scales for the general transportation industry which are sold around the world under the Structural Instrumentation brand name. IDEA's micro-processor-based systems allow truck drivers to accurately measure load weights even during loading. Transport operators in bulk commodities hauling, solid and liquid waste and logging industries are the company's primary market for on-board weighing systems. IDEA sells its portable and semi-permanent scale systems to trucking companies and also to municipal and state agencies for highway weight limit law enforcement.
