IDC Reinforces Reciprocal's Market Leader Position in "DRM Landscape: Technology, Vendors and Markets" Report.

Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2001

Reciprocal, Inc., the provider of business infrastructure for the distribution of digital assets, today announced it has been recognized by technology analyst firm IDC for its market leadership position in the burgeoning DRM and digital distribution services industry.

IDC's June 2001 Report, "The DRM Landscape: Technology, Vendors and Markets," projects the worldwide DRM market to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 106% from $96 million in 2000 to more than $3.5 billion in 2005.

Reciprocal's distinction as a market leader highlights the company's ability to provide a "DRM technology-neutral solution that removes customer risk, and insulates businesses from future changes and evolution." The report also underscores Reciprocal's capacity to provide strategic digital commerce consulting to companies across the content value chain, and its plans to expand its offering to include digital content inventory management, consulting and implementation services.

"DRM is creating trusted services and ultimately providing a trusted infrastructure that brings individuals, enterprises, and content consumers closer together," said Joshua Duhl, analyst for IDC's Document and Content Technologies research program. "While content owners, retailers and distributors have delayed their digital distribution decisions due to a lack of market standards, Reciprocal's flexible and DRM-neutral services make integration and implementation issues easier for their customers as well as consumers. While the overall market still faces some considerable challenges, IDC expects DRM application and service providers, like Reciprocal, to be a major factor in the growth and expansion of the DRM market."

"Reciprocal has focused its attention on simplifying the complexities and confusion surrounding DRM and various digital distribution decision-making, primarily in the music, publishing and software space," said John Schwarz, President and CEO, Reciprocal. "We're continuing to evolve and expand our services to include electronic inventory management and consulting for emerging markets and new geographies. We're very pleased to be recognized by IDC, as well as our clients, for our hard work and unique positioning."

IDC believes the need to share IP will drive DRM growth in the enterprise and business-to-business (B2B) markets. DRM also gives its users new power to mix and match content with commerce, which creates new B2B and business-to-consumer (B2C) opportunities to profit from the sale or lease of content through both direct and indirect sales models.

Additionally, the mounting demand to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of digitally represented information will drive DRM. The vertical industries that are currently ripe for DRM use include the financial and legal markets, government, and law enforcement. Required access protection and audit trails for electronically distributed information is starting to heat up the healthcare industry.

IDC's report The DRM Landscape: Technologies, Vendors, and Markets (IDC #B24891) analyzes, sizes, and forecasts the worldwide markets for DRM software. This report reviews the evolution of DRM and discusses vendors' offerings and strategies. Horizontal and vertical market opportunities, as well as market trends, are discussed.
