IDB Marked, Syria Works to Restore Balance to Environment.

DAMASCUS, (SANA) - On May 22nd of every year the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) for promoting and understanding biodiversity issues.

For this year, forest biodiversity is the theme of the IDB.

The celebration theme focused on forests and protecting them.

The primary thought for the day is saving the forests and its biodiversity.

Based on the wide biological diversity in Syria, It joined the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which was opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992.

Syria has 519 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to the International Center of Controlling Reserves.

0.8 of the species are native i.e.

do not exist elsewhere and 3.3 of them are endangered of extinction.

Director of Animal Protection Project in Syria, SPANA, Darm Tabba, said forests in Syria have maintained their sustainability for thousands of years, adding they are rich biological atmosphere, containing a big number of diversified types of creatures which achieve a sort of biological balance.

Deciduous forests are considered a variant ecosystem through providing nourishment and shelter to several animals.

Evergreen forests also help achieve biological balance for supporting life of many creatures due to trees' ability to adapt with local environment.
