IDB COMMUNICATIONS ANNOUNCES OPERATING AGREEMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL TELEPHONE SERVICE WITH TELMEX OF MEXICO

LOS ANGELES, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- IDB WORLDCOM, the private line and international long distance telephone unit of IDB Communications Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDBX), announced today that the company has signed an Operating Agreement with TELMEX, of Mexico. This agreement is the culmination of several years of strategic planning between TELMEX and TRT Communications, which was recently acquired by IDB.
IDB's agreement singed on March 29, 1993, by Steven Carroll, president of IDB WORLDCOM, and Jose Antonio, president of Long Distance Services for TELMEX, enables IDB WORLDCOM to offer, for the first time ever, international telephone services via direct Operating Agreement. IDB currently offers the lease of voice and data international business services (IBS) channels with Mexico via the Morelos Satellite system.
Edward R. Cheramy, president of IDB, said, "Based upon our initial estimates of the traffic volumes we expect to receive under the agreement, the additional revenue stream should result in an increase in annual earnings of $.12 to $.15 per share for our shareholders. Because it will take a few months for the services to be fully operational, the impact on 1993 results should be in the $.03 to $.05 per share range."
"IDB has a strong presence in Los Angeles and Houston and because of the close proximity in location to Mexico, we will be able to focus our business efforts where a high concentration of international telephone traffic has been rapidly increasing," said Carroll. "We feel confident that we will be able to capture a significant share of the increasing cross-border traffic between the U.S. and Mexico."
Operating a diverse global network of fiber optic submarine cable and satellite transmission services, IDB WORLDCOM provides numerous routing options to virtually every region in the world, with operating agreements with over 100 countries.
According to the available statistics on Mexico traffic, traffic volumes to and from the United States and Mexico topped 5 billion minutes in 1992. This number is expected to grow dramatically, fueled by the explosion of trade activities related to approval of the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).
IDB Communications Group, Inc. operates a domestic and international communications network which provides its customers with radio and television transmission services, international private line and public long distance telephone services, facsimile and data connections and mobile satellite communications capabilities.
