ICL announces new magnetic tapes for system 4.

ICL has developed a new phase encoded, 9-track magnetic tape system for use with its System 4 computers. The system consists of a device control unit and three types of phase encoded magnetic tape units. A 7-track magnetic tape unit is available to provided complete industry compatibility and to facilitate changeover from older ranges.

The 9-track tapes will be compatible with both current and proposed ISO and ECMA standards. However, in reading and writing tapes that do not follow the standard ICL System 4 format, user programs will have to handle labels and code conversions.
