ICL FIRST TO ANNOUNCE X/OPEN XPG4 BASE BRANDING FOR UNIX, MAINFRAME
OPERATING SYSTEMS; OVER 20 COMPONENT PRODUCTS ALSO XPG4 BRANDED
TOKYO, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- At a press conference here today, ICL PLC became the world's first Open Systems supplier to announce the achievement of XPG4 BASE branding for two of its major product streams -- its DRS/NX (UNIX SVR4) operating systems and its mainframe operating system, Open VME. Almost two dozen ICL component products have also achieved XPG4 branding, more than any other vendor currently offers. The XPG4 brand assures users that products conform to a single set of standards and quality criteria and that the delivered products will realize the promised user benefits.
Earlier this month X/Open launched the new, significantly extended version of its open system definition, XPG4. At XPG3 ICL was one of the first companies to achieve full XPG3 PLUS conformance on its UNIX servers. It was also the first company in the world to obtain XPG3 branding for its mainframe operating system - Open VME. With XPG4 branding ICL builds on its world lead in bringing the benefits of open corporate computing to users of ICL mainframe systems.
Andrew Roberts, director of ICL's Mid Range Systems Division and chairman of the X/Open board, chaired the press conference in Tokyo to announce XPG4 branding. He said, "The great value of X/Open's industry collaboration and the commitment of vendors to XPG4 is that it provides a strong unifying force which will continue to help avoid fragmentation within the industry. This integration through X/Open is the key to successful Open Systems, and ICL will continue to demonstrate unswerving commitment to a unified path to Open Systems."
ICL Collaboration With USL ON UNIX SVR4.2
ICL's Mid Range Systems Division worked in close collaboration with UNIX System Laboratories (USL) to achieve XPG4 branding for UNIX SVR4.2 and the XPG4 BASE components. Source code for both SVR4.2 and the BASE components will be available from USL.
Robert Mitze, managing director of UNIX System Laboratories Europe, said, "The X/Open brand is a visible symbol of assurance for buyers and developers of open systems products. The collaboration with ICL culminating in the award by X/Open of its XPG4 brand to UNIX SVR4.2 further confirms SVR4.2 as the premier open systems platform today."
The XPG4 test and verification process and the XPG4 brand will be increasingly used as the standard procurement tool for open systems, ensuring both application portability and interoperability between systems. Today, XPG3 is the most widely used procurement tool for Open Systems platforms and components in the world. Upward compatibility between the two specification sets assures users of applications continuity and investment protection.
