ICI LEADS WORLD RACE TO PHASE OUT CFCs & HCFCs

ICI LEADS WORLD RACE TO PHASE OUT CFCs & HCFCs
WILMINGTON, Del., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- ICI has developed an

addition to its "KLEA" family of ozone-benign refrigerants which will speed up CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) phase-out.
"KLEA" 32 will enable manufacturers of air-conditioning and low temperature refrigeration equipment which currently use HCFCs, in particular HCFC 22, to switch to the new totally ozone-benign product range. Until the development of "KLEA" 32, manufacturers could choose between CFCs or HCFCs, which both have an ozone depletion potential. "KLEA" 32, an HFC (hydrofluorocarbon), is ozone-benign.
"KLEA" 32, the latest addition to ICI's $500 million program to develop and produce environmentally acceptable alternatives to CFCs and HCFCs, will be produced at a $7 million plant in Cheshire, England, scheduled to be opened later this month. More than half of the output is destined for North America where air-conditioning and low temperature refrigeration applications are especially important. World-scale production could be possible by the mid-1990s.
"KLEA" 32 brings new versatility to ICI's "KLEA" range of CFC and HCFC replacements because it can be blended in differing quantities with "KLEA" 134a, another HFC, to create the "KLEA" Blends range. Specific blends have been formulated as replacements for HCFC 22 and R 501, a mixture of CFC 115 and HCFC 22.
ICI will supply customers worldwide in the low temperature refrigeration and the air-conditioning industries with the new product range.
John Beckitt, ICI Fluorochemicals Business Manager, said: "'KLEA' 32 and 'KLEA' Blends are the result of ICI's policy to invest in totally ozone-benign CFC replacements rather than HCFCs. This new development confirms ICI's position as the world leader in CFC and now HCFC replacement technology."
In 1990 ICI was the world's first company to produce commercial quantities of "KLEA" 134a for use in automotive air-conditioning and domestic refrigeration. The product, currently manufactured at Runcorn in Cheshire, is being sold throughout the world. ICI is now building a second and larger plant in St. Gabriel, La., which is scheduled for production in early 1993. Another plant is being built in Japan.
ICI Americas Inc., headquartered in Wilmington, Del., is a U.S. subsidiary of Imperial Chemicals PLC (NYSE: ICI), one of the world's leading science-based companies with manufacturing operations in 40 countries. Annual worldwide sales of the ICI group of companies are approximately $25 billion. In North America, including the U.S., Canada and Mexico, ICI employs about 25,000 people and has annual sales of more than $6 billion.
